The course aims to teach the basics of economic science to all students who are interested in economic theory and the Science of Economics in particular, i.e. the basics of Micro-economics and Macro-economics. The syllabus has been designed in line with the curriculum of the course. It consists of 14 topics (7 of them being in Micro-economic theory and 7 – in Macro-economic theory). It was a challenge to reduce the number of topics to 14 (due to the limited number of classes planned for the course), since the body of economic knowledge in the field has grown immensely and has become extremely complex over the years. Therefore, this course has been designed to teach students about everything related to general economic theory, yet it will not teach them everything about economic theory.

The contents of traditional courses in Economics have been adapted so as to make the subject matter more comprehensible and the learning process easier. The major argument in favour of omitting some topics was to strike a balance between theoretical insight and pragmatic utility. The course in Economics will thus equip students with the basic knowledge they need to acquire and develop further to become accomplished economists, administrators and managers.

The topics taught in the course in Economics have the following structure: a short introduction focusing on the major issues to be discussed in the unit is followed by a summary of the knowledge and skills which students are expected to acquire after studying that unit. These are followed by a presentation on the topic (the main body of text); a list of literary sources which are recommended for further reading; a summary of the key words and concepts related to the topic; self-check questions; questions for discussion; an abstract providing a brief summary of the topic.

The underlying idea of the course is to lay the foundations of basic economic knowledge; to teach major economic categories and to give students awareness about the complex Micro- and Macro-economic theory so that they will be able to successfully employ that knowledge as business professionals.
